Willie Randolph, former Mets manager

The Mets fired manager Willie Randolph early Tuesday morning after months of speculation that his job was on the line. A pre-season favorite to do well this year, the Mets have had a disappointing season so far, and their collapse at the end of last season is still fresh in the minds of many fans.

Love him or not, blame it on the players if you wish, but it is a manager's job to develop personnel and maximize the potential of those who work for him - on the field as in the halls of corporate America. Otherwise, why have a manager at all? So, it wasn't working here and it was time for Willie to go. The Wimpons (as they should henceforth be known) caved into media pressure and a lot of passionate but no-nothing fans. Willie is getting a very raw deal here while Minaya has apparently been coated with teflon. Willie should not have been fired and given every opportunity to right the ship and anyone, including the owners and GM, who think otherwise, don't deserve to be running this franchise. Willie was the true baseball professional in this group and my only hope is that some other more professional organization hires him and lets him prove his worth.
