President-Elect Barack Obama is considering offering Democratic primary rival Hillary Clinton a position in his cabinet as Secretary of State.  Many Democrats and Republicans have endorsed the idea, including former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.  Obama aides have begun vetting Senator Clinton for the position, including looking into former President Bill Clinton's finances and activities.

"I believe it would be an outstanding appointment. If it is true, it shows a number of things, including great courage on the part of the President-Elect. To appoint a very strong personality into a prominent cabinet position requires a great deal of courage."

From an Obama insider, via Politico:

"During the campaign there was a lot of agreement and correspondence about how the grassroots felt about the Clintons and how the Obama leadership felt," he said. "There's a bit of a divergence now. They're confused that the guy they elected . . . because we need to go in a different direction on the world stage" might choose a secretary of state with whom he had some of his sharpest foreign policy disagreements during the primary campaign..."
